My Role

I was the lead designer for the KEP Launch and worked closely with product management and development team members to adjust the design to meet required delivery dates and ensure a high quality user experience within those constraints.

My responsibilities included conducting user research with publishers, creating wireframes and high-fidelity mockups, establishing the information architecture, and collaborating closely with engineers to ensure the implementation matched the design vision while being technically feasible.

The Problem

There are hundreds of thousands of books that aren't available to customers because it has historically been challenging to turn those titles into digital books. In addition, Amazon's existing platform for publishers was only for very large publishers and required many internal resources to support each publisher.

Some small publishers had used Amazon's self-publishing platform, Kindle Direct Publishing, to list their titles, but that was an unsupported use case and provided a less than ideal experience for publishing companies managing large catalogs.

The Solution

Kindle Enterprise Publishing (KEP) is a self-service platform that allows publishers to reach Amazon customers worldwide. They can manage any number of users, work with conversion houses, quickly list titles via a bulk process, or add them one at a time.

Worldwide pricing can be automated or adjusted on an Amazon store/marketplace basis, giving publishers the flexibility they need while maintaining simplicity for common workflows.

Landing & Onboarding

The landing page and onboarding experience were designed to immediately communicate value and help publishers understand how KEP could help them reach more customers. The clean, focused design guides users through account setup and their first book upload.

Catalog Management

The catalog manager allows publishers to view and manage their entire book catalog at a glance. Publishers can filter, sort, and search through thousands of titles, perform bulk operations, and quickly access detailed information about each book's performance across different Amazon marketplaces.

Product Management

The product details and settings pages allow publishers to manage all aspects of their books, from metadata and pricing to distribution settings. The interface was designed to handle the complexity of managing products across multiple international marketplaces while keeping common tasks simple and efficient.

Task Management

The task management system provides publishers with visibility into the status of their book submissions, conversions, and updates. Publishers can track progress, identify issues that need attention, and manage their workflow efficiently across their entire catalog.

Impact

Kindle Enterprise Publishing successfully launched, enabling thousands of publishers to bring their catalogs to Amazon's global marketplace. The self-service nature of the platform dramatically reduced the operational overhead required to onboard new publishers while providing them with powerful tools to manage their business.

The platform democratized access to Amazon's publishing infrastructure, making it possible for small and medium-sized publishers to compete on the same platform as major publishing houses, ultimately making more books available to readers worldwide.
